Graft modification of polybenzimidazole membranes for organic solvent ultrafiltration with scale up to spiral wound modules

چکیده

In this work the selectivity of crosslinked organic solvent stable PBI membranes is tuned by varying molar ratio two grafting agents: a long flexible polymer modifier (Elastamine RE-1-1000, 1000 g mol-1) and small molecule (2-methoxyethylamine, 75 mol-1). Grafting exclusively with chain provided membrane molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) 2000 mol-1 in acetonitrile. Increasing proportion reaction capped sites membrane. This caused decrease density allowed for MWCO to be customised between 20,000 High densities underlie control performance, up 43% increase specific during modification. technique was scaled manufacture 5 m lengths that were incorporated into 1.8″ x 12” spiral wound modules, which showed performance consistent flat sheet membranes.

Evaluation of Three Different Cleaners Recommended for Ultrafiltration Systems by Direct Observations of Commercial-Scale Spiral-Wound Ultrafiltration Membranes

Efficacy of cleaners designed for use with ultrafiltration systems was determined by microbiological evaluation and thmugh visual inspection using scanning elecmn microscopy. The ultrafiltration system containing two commercial-scale, polysulfone membranes was soiled with sweet whey (4OOC) then rinsed with water and membranes were removed. One half of each membrane was snaked for 2 h at 38OC in...

Backwash of RO spiral wound membranes

Osmotic backwash experiments were conducted and analytical model was developed in attempt to describe the backwash mechanism. A single unit of a spiral wound RO membrane was used in the experiments. The RO membrane was fed by salted water solution. Permeate flux characteristics of the membrane were determined through steadystate RO experiments. Then the system was shiRed immediately to a backwa...

High-temperature polybenzimidazole-based membranes

Polybenzimidazole (PBI)-based high-temperature proton exchange membranes (PEMs) offer many advantages that aid in a simplified fuel cell system design. Such benefits include high resistance to fuel impurities (most notably carbon monoxide), fast electrode kinetics, and simplified water and thermal management due to operational temperatures above 120 ◦C.[1] As a result of its intrinsic physicoch...

Optimization of commercial net spacers in spiral wound membrane modules

CFD simulations have been used to determine mass transfer coefficients and power consumption of commercial net spacers. The simulations show transversal and longitudinal vortices, vortex shedding and instationary flow behavior leading to the enhanced mass transfer in spacer filled-channels compared to empty channels. The results of the simulations were validated with experiments and compared wi...

Modeling of spiral wound pervaporation modules with application to the separation of styrene/ethylbenzene mixtures

A mathematical model is derived to simulate the performance of spiral wound membrane modules for the pervaporative separation of binary liquid mixtures. Permeation through the polymer membrane is described by a detailed solution–diffusion model. Flory–Huggins theory is used to predict solubility of the penetrants, while the composition and temperature dependence of the diffusion coefficients ar...
